Painful in the sense that there is an amazing amount of pressure on my hips that causes pain by morning, which I've been feeling since about the middle of the third month. I'm sure it has more to do with being able to feel the nerves more clearly than extra weight, since I've actually lost five pounds since my first OB appointment. Shifting numerous times from one side to the other during the night doesn't help at all, sadly. Lying on my back is actually the most comfortable thing for me, but I know that at this point it's dangerous, so I don't do it. The good news is I get the mattress I've wanted for years because of this!

Extra weight definitely has nothing to do with it, even if you had any to worry about. My guess is that pregnant women's hip joints take a beating because all of the sudden they're also having to support a growing uterus, which gets heavy enough to pull and drag on places that are not used to that amount of pressure. I started getting uncomfortable at night long before I was showing, and I think it was because the weight was just distributed differently, meaning that my body couldn't settle normally but instead fell into positions that made my hips and shoulders hurt.

Anyway, glad you're getting a good mattress out of it. Since you would prefer to lie on your back, is there any way you could wedge a pillow halfway under yourself so that you're not quite flat on your back but not quite on the side either?
