About 18 weeks after conception
Cramped Living Quarters
This week, your fetus weighs around 9 ounces (260 grams) and measures 5.5 to 6.3 inches (14 to 16 centimeters) from crown to rump. Your baby's growth is taking up more and more room in the uterus. As it continues to grow, there will be more pressure put on mom's lungs, stomach, kidneys and bladder.
Now your baby's skin is thickening under the vernix caseosa (this is a protective, waxy coating). The skin is also developing layers which include the dermis, epidermis and subcutaneous layer. Baby's hair and nails also continue to grow this week.
I can attest to the pressure on my internal organs, especially the stomach as of late. Apparently, my darling child has decided to migrate upward within the past week (trying to hide under my belly button for part of the sonogram, in fact). This has caused some very odd sensations and not so fun reactions in my digestive system. The aforementioned weight is incorrect, though. Most other sites, magazines, etc. that I've read put the fetus between 10 and 13 ounces this week, and this little one is exactly on the upper limit of that. For those of you who have foolishly eaten three or more (somehow) slices of my challah quickly and then later felt that very heavy weight in your stomach, you can relate to some of what I'm feeling.
